An official of the Mizoram CMO informed that Zoramthanga met the Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday in New Delhi and discussed at length the steps required to be taken for revamping the Lengpui airport, which “once was one of the busiest airports of Northeast”.
Zoramthanga discussed in details about the revamp of the Lengpui airport for improving air connectivity between Mizoram and other cities of the country.
“The Civil Aviation minister assured the CM of appropriate steps at the earliest,” the official further added.
The Mizoram CM also requested Puri to allow additional flights from the airport.
“Three private airlines, IndiGo, GoAir and Alliance Air, has promised to start their flights from next month,” the official further added.
“Currently, only Air India is operating one flight between Aizawl and Kolkata,” the official added.
The official further informed that revamping the airport would help the people of Mizoram as now they have to travel over 160 km to Silchar via strenuous and hostile roads to catch flight for Kolkata, Delhi and other important cities.
He further said that the private airlines have begun withdrawing operations since 2011 citing various reasons, including safety, maintenance and viability.
