Guwahati: At least nine people have died in Tuensang district of Nagaland in suspected cases of spurious liquor consumption, prompting police to issue a public advisory urging people to refrain from consuming alcohol.
Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma shared the information on his official Facebook page on September 12, stating that the deaths were reported at the Civil Hospital in Tuensang.
The fatalities are suspected to be linked to the consumption of spurious liquor, with “MC Rum” being suspected as the possible source.
In his advisory, the DGP urged residents to avoid consuming liquor, particularly in Mon, Mokokchung, Tuensang, Longleng, Kiphire, Shamator and Noklak districts.
He also appealed to people in other parts of the state to abstain from consuming liquor as a precautionary measure.
“Alarming information coming from Tuensang. At least 9 deaths reported from Civil Hospital, Tuensang. Suspected to be Spurious Liquor. Suspected to be ‘MC Rum’,” Sharma wrote in the post.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident. Authorities have not released further details regarding the identities of the deceased or the circumstances surrounding the suspected liquor consumption.
