Internet services on mobile phones in the whole Khasi and Jaiñtia region of Meghalaya will remain under suspension for another 24 hours.
Internet on mobile phones was suspended since June 1 after trouble mongers spread false news and rumours through social media in connection with the incident at Them ïew Mawlong on May 31 that led to a violent protest by mob at Motphran area and demanded shifting of settlers from Them ïew Mawlong.
Curfew was also imposed in 14 areas under Lumdiengjri police station in Shillong in view of the breakdown of law and order, besides night curfew in the whole of Shillong.
East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner, Peter Sansan Dkhar on Monday said that internet service on mobile phones will continue and suspension may be lifted in the next 24 hours.
Suspension of short message service (SMS) on mobile phones was lifted a few days ago.
He also said that relaxation of curfew in areas under Lumdiengjri police which include Jaïaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including areas under Cantonment Beat House (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge) remained unchanged from 7 am to 6 pm. Also, night curfew in the whole Shillong remained unchanged from 9 pm to 5 am.
Dkhar said that the district administration and law enforcing agencies were closely monitoring the situation, based on which, a decision would be taken to either relax or lift the curfew.
