The Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh has asked Meghalaya government to invest more resources towards promoting organic farming in the state.

Singh visited Lawsohtun organic farm here in the State Capital and interacted with a group of farmers at Lawsohtun who have been promoting organic farming on a four-hectare land.

Around 20 households maintain the farm.

Appreciating the efforts of the farmers, the minister encouraged them to expand their practice of organic farming. He also asked the state government officials to extend all possible assistance to the farmers.

Meghalaya government officials said the state has developed organic farming on 40,000 hectares of land covering all the 11 districts of the state and that this practice would complete three years in March 2019.

This will enable the state to get the necessary certification for the products as organic products.

On Saturday evening, the Union minister reviewed the activities of the departments of agriculture, animal husbandry, veterinary and allied sectors with officials at the Raj Bhavan here.

He instructed the officials to ensure that the schemes meant for the farmers are delivered to the last mile and within a specified time frame.

He said this would enable the government to achieve the goal of doubling farmers’ income by 2022.

Singh also exhorted the officials to submit utilization certificate of funds to the Centre on time so that there was no delay in the flow of funds from Delhi.
