Shillong: A section of people from Jaintia Hills according to Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar approached the government with a request for railway connectivity.

Dhar who is in charge of Urban Affairs said that it is not the government’s proposal but a request from concerned residents.

He assured that the government would carefully consider all viewpoints before making a decision on the matter.

The Deputy Chief Minister added that there might be initial apprehensions from some quarters but emphasized that the government’s objective is to bring development and welfare for the people.

He added that efforts would be made to create awareness among the residents about the potential benefits of the proposed railway connectivity to Jaintia Hills.

Responding to concerns raised by certain NGOs about potential influx issues, Dhar assured that the state government has mechanisms in place to address immigration concerns.

On the other hand, the Jaiñtia Students’ Union (JSU) and Jaiñtia National Council (JNC), expressed their opposition to the railway project.

They cited the absence of adequate measures to control immigration and protect tribal trade as their primary concerns.
