Guwahati: Public figure Timjim Momin from Meghalayaโ€™s North Garo Hills district has approached the deputy commissioner, seeking an inquiry into the engagement of over 400 labourers from outside the state at Mendipathar railway station.

The workers reportedly carried out rake loading work on December 28, 2025.

Momin flagged the issue over concerns about local employment and social impact. He said the move deprived local tribal youth and daily wage earners of job opportunities.

He pointed out that authorities could have engaged local labourers for the work. Instead, contractors allegedly brought workers from outside Meghalaya. He warned that such practices hurt the morale of the local workforce and create a sense of alienation among indigenous communities.

Momin urged the district administration to identify the contractors or agencies responsible for hiring the labourers. He asked the authorities to take action as per the law.

He also called for transparency in the recruitment process and strict compliance with local employment norms.

Citing the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, Momin demanded that authorities ensure full engagement of eligible local tribal labourers for rake loading work at the railway station. He said the Sixth Schedule protects the rights of indigenous communities and safeguards their interests in employment matters.

The representation also raised concerns about possible infiltration into Mendipathar and nearby areas. Momin warned that people affected by eviction drives in neighbouring states might enter the region under the pretext of labour work.

He called for stronger monitoring and verification mechanisms to prevent any illegal settlement. He also asked the administration to maintain law and order in the area.

Momin suggested stricter documentation and identity verification for all labourers engaged at the site. He also recommended periodic reviews by law enforcement agencies.

Momin appealed to the district administration to intervene without delay. He said prompt action would protect local livelihoods and uphold constitutional safeguards. He added that timely steps would also deter similar incidents in the future.

Momin has sent copies of his representation to Meghalaya Chief Minister, the local Member of Parliament and MLAs from North Garo Hills. He said the move aims to ensure coordinated action at different levels of the government
