Meghalaya Meghalaya Human Rights Commission takes up Lum Survey demolition case
On Thursday, HYC members demolished homes in the Lum Survey.

Guwahati: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has intervened in the demolition of homes in Lum Survey after residents called for help.

According to a report by The Shillong Times, the MHRC took suo motu cognisance of the situation, meaning they initiated action based on the news report itself.

The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary, demanding a detailed report on the matter by May 30.

This comes after the demolition of approximately 80 dwellings on Thursday by members of the HYC (Hynniewtrep National Youth Front).

The HYC had issued a two-week deadline to the East Khasi Hills district administration for the removal of the structures, which they claimed were illegally built by settlers.

It may be mentioned that the slum residents are often termed as illegal settlers of “Bangladeshi origin”.

They have appealed to the Meghalaya government for assistance.
