The Meghalaya government has decided to convene a one-day special session of the State Legislative Assembly to bring in a government resolution to implement the ILP in the state.

The decision to convene the special session of the State Assembly came after a delegation of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government led by its chairman and chief minister Conrad K Sangma met union home minister Amit Shah in New Delhi on Saturday morning at 12.30 am.

The delegation urged the union home minister to implement the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the entire Meghalaya.

The delegation also apprised the Union home minister about the shortage of essential commodities throughout the state in view of the law and order situation in the neighbouring state of Assam.

Informing about the meeting with Shah, Conrad Sangma tweeted: “MDA Govt delegation called on Hon’ble Home Minister @AmitShah ji around 12:30 am today in Delhi to urge the central Govt to implement Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Meghalaya.”

“The State Govt will convene a one-day special session to bring in Govt resolution to implement ILP,” he added.

“The union home minister was very receptive to all the issues raised by the delegation, and has agreed to examine the matter at the earliest,” a statement said.

The MDA delegation comprised Assembly speaker Metbah Lyngdoh (president of UDP), deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong (NPP), health minister A.L. Hek (BJP), sports minister Banteidor Lyngdoh (president of PDF) and transport minister Sniawbhalang Dhar (NPP).

The other members of the delegation are urban affairs minister Hamlet Dohling (PDF), PHE minister Samlin Malngiang (HSPDP), Saleng A Sangma (NCP), Lambor Malngiang (Independent) and Thomas A Sangma (NPP).

It may be mentioned that more than 20,000 people gathered in front of Raj Bhavan in Shillong on Friday demanding implementation of the ILP in Meghalaya.

Later, four groups of Meghalaya on Friday said they will fetch MLAs from their houses if they fail to attend a session of the state Assembly to pass a resolution on Inner Line Permit (ILP).

The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynñiewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) and Ri-Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF) demanded the government convene a special session of the Assembly within December 19.
