Amid raging protests against the Citizenship Act, union home minister Amit Shah‘s visits to Shillong on Sunday and Arunachal visit on Monday have been cancelled.

Shah was scheduled to visit Shillong for the passing out parade of the North-East Police Academy on Sunday and then he was supposed to visit Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh for a festival.

Protest against the then Citizenship (Amendment) Bill turned violent in Assam on Wednesday and the wave of protest gradually spread to various states of Northeast including Meghalaya.

In capital Shillong, protest against the Bill turned violent and vehicles were torched in different places of the city.

Curfew was also imposed in various parts of the city on Thursday.

On Friday, thousands of protestors took out a procession in Shillong and gathered in front of Raj Bhavan demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) and in protest against the CAB, 2019.

Tear gas cells were fired on the protestors to disperse them.

But mobile internet and SMS services have remained suspended in the entire Meghalaya.

The CAB was passed in Lok Sabha on Monday and then in Rajya Sabha on Wednesday and President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to CAB Thursday midnight, turning it into an Act.
