The Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) on Wednesday announced that they would hold a mass protest on July 19, 2019 against inaction to solve the Assam-Mizoram border issue.

Around 20 colleges and students’ associations will be holding a protest rally to show their anger towards the Mizoram government for its lack of action regarding the issue.

MZP president L Ramdinliana Renthlei said, “Even after a time period of three months, there has been no been action from the core committee formed by the Mizoram government to solve the issue.”

He also said they have met the Mizoram chief minister twice and the state home minister often but no outcomes have been seen so far.

The border dispute between Mizoram and Assam has been a long pending issue.

In March 2018, tension erupted in Zophai area near Bairabi town in the Mizoram-Assam border when Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) members attempted to construct a resting shed there.

Students and journalists were severely injured as police baton-charged them to drive away the crowd.

Minor clashes also occurred on July 6 when Assam forest department re-occupied an old building of security forces near Lailapoor on the disputed land.

MZP had asked the government to push the Assam officials to vacate the disputed land by July 17 failing which it would hold a protest on July 19.
