Border dispute: High level team to visit Assam-Mizoram border

A high level team led by Joint Secretary (Northeast) in the Union Home Ministry Satyendra Garg will visit Assam-Mizoram border within a week to take stock of the ground situation.

Joint Secretary Garg will be accompanied by principal secretaries (Home) of Mizoram and Assam. The team will also be assisted by officials of Survey of India.

The high level team will submit its findings to the Union Home Secretary which will be discussed in a follow up meeting with the chief secretaries of the two states.

Thereafter, a meeting will be convened by the Union Home Minister with Chief Ministers of Assam and Mizoram. The next meeting on the issue is likely to take place onApril 1.

This was decided in a meeting convened by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba at North Blockon Tuesday.

Assam chief secretary TY Das and Mizoram chief secretary Arvind Ray were present in the meeting. Rajiv Jain, Director, Intelligence Bureau and Director General of Police of both the states were also present in the meeting.

“We have discussed in details the situation along the Assam-Mizoram border. A team led by Joint Secretary (NE) will visit the area very soon,” said Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay.

The meeting on the interstate border issue was convened by Home Minister Rajnath Singh after the recent incidents at Bairabi on March 8 and 10.

Both the chief secretaries stated that the position of their respective state governments on the issue of construction of a shed at Kachurtal near Bairabi.

Both the state government reiterated their commitment to maintain peace and resolve the issues amicably. It was decided in the meeting to maintain status quo at the spot. Assembly of people at the site will not be allowed.

Both the government of Assam and Mizoram will take all measures to maintain peace in their respective areas.
