Two unidentified persons who were rounded up on Tuesday by locals from two different places of Saikul, the headquarters of Sadar Hills East subdivision in Manipur, suspected to be child lifters are not cannibals.

In social media, some people were spreading rumours that the unknown persons suspected to be child-lifters are cannibals and they have ‘eaten some children’.

According to police, the two unidentified persons were rounded up by locals of Ichaigojang village and Champhai village of Saikul under Sadar Hills sub-division, Senapati district and Imphal east district respectively and badly assaulted them.

Police said the two persons were captured by the locals on suspicion that they were suspected child lifters.

Later, the two unidentified persons were handed over to Saikul police after they were severely beaten by the locals.

As the two were severely injured, they were taken to RIMS causality for medical treatment, police said.

Police later clarified that the news on the social media is just a rumour and there are no such record in the concerned police station.

The police also cautioned the people not to spread such false rumours without confirmation from the officials.

Meanwhile, police have begun investigation into the whole incident and are trying to ascertain the identity of the persons.
