Manipur: Assam Rifles operation nets six smugglers & Rs 3 crore worth of timber

IMPHAL: Personnel of the Assam Rifles conducted a successful operation resulting in apprehension of six suspected international timber smugglers in Manipur and the seizure of approximately 35,000 CFT (Cubic Feet) of timber valued at Rs 3 crore in the local black markets.

Additionally, three trucks, fully loaded with smuggled timber, were impounded during the operation, officials in Manipur informed on Tuesday (April 16).

Assam Rifles personnel conducted an area domination patrol in the vicinity of Wamku, Charlong and Khonjol in Chandel district of Manipur, which shares borders with Myanmar to the south.

During the patrol, three trucks were intercepted and upon inspection, were found to be transporting 20 timber logs illegally.

The seized timber, the six apprehended individuals and the three vehicles impounded, were handed over to the Chandel district forest officer in Manipur for further investigation.
