The construction of the National Sports University has been reportedly halted following clashes that erupted between police and activists of local organisations on Friday.

Five police personnel were injured as agitators armed with deadly weapons barged into the under construction campus of National Sports University and vandalised properties of the varsity on Friday.

Police had to resort to tear gas shelling firing of mock bombs to disperse the ‘mob’ and bring the situation under control.

Meanwhile, the Konsakhul Area Joint Action Committee (KAJAC), which is leading the protest against the setting up the national Sports University has called for an indefinite bandh along National and State Highways from January 31 (Sunday).

Civil society organisations in Kangpokpi district have been claiming that the land where the National Sports University is being constructed lies within the administrative jurisdiction of the Kangpokpi district.

However, the land was allotted by the Imphal West district administration, the Civil society organisations in Kangpokpi claimed.
