The three-day seed sowing festival, Luira Phanit, began at Ukhrul in Manipur from Friday amid much with pomp and gaiety.
The festival is being organized at the Mission Ground Alungtang, Ukhrul.
Village headman H A Sarimaya inaugurated the festival by the traditional ritual of seed sowing called ‘Awungashi Kharuk’ and hoisted the village flag at the VA Court Awungtang, Ukhrul in the presence of elders and the locals of Hunphun/Ukhrul village.
As part of the celebrations, traditional games, folk dance and folk songs are being organized where locals are taking part with much enthusiasm.
On the last day of the festival, a beauty contest will also be held where young damsels of Ukhrul will be contesting for the title ‘Miss Hunphun Luira’.
Luira Phanit, the seed sowing festival of the Tangkhul community was also celebrated at Diphupar village in Nagaland’s Dimapur.
The programme was organized by Dimapur Tangkhul Hoho with Naga Hoho vice president HK Zhimomi as the chief guest.
Hundreds of locals from the Tangkhul community, both young and old attended the celebration in their traditional attire. The programme was also attended by residents and organisations of Diphupar village, other than the Tangkhul community.
