Imphal: Sit-in protests by two groups were held in different districts of Manipur on Monday against death threat and monetary demands by armed miscreants.

Meira Paibis (women torch bearers) – the women vigilante groups from Imphal West district’s Keishamthong Top Leirak scrambled onto the stage in Imphal in protest against death threat to Meira Paibi secretary general Sanabam (O) Tamphaibemma by armed miscreants.

“Two unidentified armed men handed over live bullets to the secretary general at her residence in Imphal’s Top Leirak area on the night of October 19,” one of the protestors, S Sanahanbi, said.

Sanabam, however, managed to escape from the clutches of the armed men.

The Meira Paibis from Keishamthong demanded that the motive behind such a deadly act by armed miscreants should come to the fore at the earliest.

On the other hand, drivers of commercial vehicles in Thoubal district held a sit-in demonstration at Heirok Lamkhai near the Wangjing Kodompokpi area.

The protest – organised under the aegis of Thoubal District Transporters Union (TDTU) – was in response to the “unwarranted” and “unbearable” monetary demands to the drivers of commercial vehicles by armed miscreants.

The union urged all organisations and individuals to refrain from indulging in such acts under the guise of the ongoing ethnic clashes in the state.
