Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday urged Meghalaya government to take urgent measures for ensuring smooth movement of people and vehicles of Assam passing through Meghalaya.
Chief Minister Sonowal spoke to his Meghalaya counterpart Conrad Sangma over phone and sought his intervention in this regard.
Sonowal during the talk informed the Meghalaya Chief Minister that the harassment caused to the people of Assam has also been brought to the notice of the Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and sought Sangma’s expeditious intervention.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister while taking cognizance of seriousness of the matter assured Sonowal to take all necessary measures in this regard, said a statement issued from CMO.
A day after the publication of the final draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) in Meghalaya launched its own drive to prevent entry of suspected illegal migrants into the state by erecting check points in some areas bordering Assam.
The check points were manned by KSU members at Ratacherra in East Jaiñtia Hills district bordering Cachar district, Athiabari in West Khasi Hills district bordering Kamrup and Goalpara districts of Assam and 20th Mile near Byrnihat in Ri Bhoi district.
