The city police continue operation against teer gambling in Guwahati.
During the operation, the Jalukbari police were able to arrest one teer gambler, identified as 48-year-old Pralay Barman on Friday.
Pralay Barman, a resident of BG Colony in Maligaon, who was arrested from Bor Bazar of Pandu under Jalukbari Police Station, was produced in the court on Saturday which sent him to the judicial custody.
After his arrest, a case (No 1359/18) was registered at Jalukbari Police Station under sections 13, 14 of the Assam Game and Betting Act, 1970.
During the operation, the police also recovered a large number of teer tickets from the spot.
Police said, Barman had been operating a teer gambling racket from a small shop in Bor Bazar of Pandu.
“The police have been continuing operations against teer gambling in the Pandu area,” informed Moniram Kalita, ASI, Jalukbari Police.
It has been reported that there are a number of allegations against Barman that he has been involved in running teer business in various parts of Guwahati.
In August this year, the Khetri police in Guwahati arrested one Md Noorjaman Ali, for being allegedly involved in teer gambling.
The operation was led by the Officer-in-Charge of Khetri PS, Pradip Kumar Nath.
Noorjaman Ali was known as a notorious teer gambler in the area.
The police also reportedly seized a large number of tickets used in the betting.
It may be mentioned that the Dhubri Police came into action mode against gambling like ‘teer’ and other anti-social activities which had been going on in Dhubri town since the last couple of years and nabbed a total six gamblers for selling ‘teer’ tickets from the main market area of Dhubri town on July 17, 2018.
The operation was led by Deputy Superintendent of Police, Dhubri, T. Bhuyan under the directive of Dhubri Superintendent of Police (SP) Longlit Terang.
G Deka, Additional Superintendent of Police, Dhubri said that the drive against such illegal activities would continue in the coming days in the district and sought active co-operation of the locals in order to wipe out such activities.
