Hooch tragedy: No fresh reports of deaths in JMCH

There have been no more reports of deaths at Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH) in the past 40 hours of those undergoing treatment after consuming toxic liquor.

A doctor of the hospital said that the situation had stabilized with 36 being discharged today after their conditions had improved.

Among those affected, 38 belonging to Jorhat district and 39 belonging to Golaghat district had died in JMCH.

Prior to that 20 had died at Borholla area in Titabor subdivision, the place where the maximum number of people had consumed the spurious liquor taking the Jorhat district toll to 58.

More than 300 people had been admitted to the hospital in the past three days and the Borholla Community Health Centre had checked and treat about 2000 people since the night of February 21, the night in which the first 11 deaths were reported.

Meanwhile, the two main accused in distributing the liquor, Jitu Sonowal and Saurav Baruah, who were arrested at Baksa district have not been produced in court today.

A police source said that interrogation of the two is on and raids were conducted at the places where they operated and storage and other equipment were seized.

KMSS chief Akhil Gogoi, who visited JMCH today, said that both the state excise minister and the state health minister should resign owning moral responsibility.
