At a time when many cases of child marriages are reported in Assam every year, a Class IX girl student in Biswambharpur village of Katigora circle in Cachar district in the Barak Valley has come out successful in preventing her family members from getting her married.
As per a report published in TOI, a 15-year-old girl, who is going to appear in her matriculation examination next year, was determined to continue with her studies instead of getting married and after taking advices from her classmates she had taken a bold step to lodge a complaint with the district legal service authorities against her parents.
The Cachar district legal cell along with Child Development and Child Welfare, One Stop Centre and Child Line, went to her home and also met her parents, the report stated.
The TOI report quoted Biswajit Nath, a senior official from the Cachar district legal cell, as saying, “The girl’s parents were apprised of the ills of early marriage and its legal implications. We also recorded the girl’s statement. The parents came around and have told us they have abandoned the decision to marry her off before she attains legal age.”
Nation also reportedly said, the decision had been taken to arrange the girl’s marriage with a boy from Tripura due to poor financial situation of the family.
The official also further informed that being a good student, the girl had tried to persuade her parents to let her continue her studies after which she had taken help of her classmates.
