Pradip Kr Ghosh, an artisan of Assam’s Dhubri district has not only successfully created the smallest Durga idol of this season but it has also being expected to be the cheapest in cost across the State.

Ghosh, a  private tutor by profession and a local resident of Panch More area of Dhubri town has made his idol this year with bathing soap with an estimated cost of amounting Rs 55 only.

It is ready for display at the puja pandal of Sabuj Sangha Durga Puja Committee located in Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua Playground of Dhubri town.

He created the Durga idol which is just 2.25 inch in length.

“I have used only seven bathing soaps and out of seven, three small size soaps have been used for creating the idols of Durga and her four children while four soaps having big size being used to make the backside screen,” said Ghosh.

Ghosh says, he always wanted to make an idol with a difference and eco-friendly  and that’s why this year, the idea of the smallest Durga.

Last year, Ghosh had made his Durga idol with coconut fronds while in the year 2017, he displayed a six-foot tall Durga idol made of sugarcane waste at the Raja Prabhat Chandra Barua playground.

Ghosh told Northeast Now that he has been making eco-friendly idols for the past couple of years without any synthetic colours and his ideas have also been appreciated.

The artisan has been making idols from coconuts, waste of sugarcane, plastic bottles and vegetables since 1992.

This is not only inexpensive but also easy on the environment, he added.

“It would be good if artisans like me also got to show their talent on a larger platform,” added Ghosh.
