Militant killed in encounter

A cadre of the Saoraigwra faction of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB-S) was killed in an encounter with the Army in Kokrajhar district of Lower Assam on Wednesday.

Media reports quoted sources as saying: “At 2.15 pm, based on specific intelligence inputs, an operation was launched by 21 Mountain Division in general area of Deka Damra, approximately 230 km from Guwahati, in Kokrajhar district of Lower Assam.”

The operation was carried out at a place, 17 km south of the India-Bhutan international border where the armed cadre of the NDFB-S was spotted.

Sources added, “An encounter ensued, during which an NDFB(S) militant was killed.”

The NDFB-S militant has been identified as Jwel Narzary.

The Army recovered firearm and communication system from the possession of the NDFB-S cadre.

It may be mentioned that in an encounter with a joint team of Assam police and Army, a cadre of the National Democratic Front of Boroland-Saoraigwra (NDFB-S) was killed in Chirang on January 5.

The Chirang district said acting on a specific input regarding the movement of a group of NDFB (S) militants in Dwimalupara (New Basti) village under Runikhata PS, a joint team of police and 5 Garhwal Rifles of the Army laid multiple ambushes in the village since 7 am on January 4.

The deceased was identified as Sansula Basumatary alias B Sotbangsa from Selekhaguri under Runikhata police station in Chirang district.

Meanwhile, all the leaders and cadres of the proscribed rebel outfit NDFB-S have reportedly returned to India from Myanmar to join the peace process with the central government.

“All the 50 members of the NDFB-S left Myanmar early on Saturday. The Indian Army escorted the leaders and cadres from the International border to an undisclosed Army base,” a media report quoted an unidentified top NDFB (S) leader as saying.
