A 62-year-old man in Bholatar village under Dimakuchi PS of Udalguri district was trampled to death by a wild elephant in the wee hours of Saturday morning.

The incident took place when the deceased along with some villagers had gone to chase away a wild elephant that had entered their paddy fields.

The deceased has been identified as Ram Bahadur Gautam.

Villagers have informed that the elephant must have been isolated from its group as since the last few days it has been wreaking havoc in the area.

Gautam was rushed to Tangla CHC where he was declared dead on arrival.

“We never feel that there is a forest department to tackle the menace of elephants as they never patrol the village,” decried Anil Thapa, a villager.

“How long will the government refrain itself from formulating policies to protect us?” questioned Prem Bahadur Gautam- the victim’s son.

As per reports, so far 19 persons have lost their lives in human-elephant conflict this year.
