Guwahati: Assam is set to get a world-class heritage museum as the state government and the JSW Group signed a landmark agreement to establish a 45,000 sq. ft. cultural complex at Khanapara in Guwahati.

The museumโ€™s inaugural exhibition will feature the revered 17th-century devotional textile, Vrindavani Vastra, woven under the spiritual guidance of Srimanta Sankardev.

According to an official release on Tuesday, the Assam government has allotted land for the museum, while JSW Group will fully fund and construct the facility.

The museum aims to serve as a vibrant hub for art, culture, and heritage, hosting both national and international artefacts, travelling exhibitions, and cultural showcases to promote global cultural exchange.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hailed the initiative as a matter of โ€œimmense prideโ€ for the state, calling it a milestone in preserving and promoting Assamโ€™s cultural identity.

โ€œThis museum will not only bring the sacred Vrindavani Vastra home but also provide a modern platform to display Assamese art and heritage alongside global exhibitions,โ€ Sarma said.

JSW Foundation Chairperson Sangita Jindal said the collaboration underscores JSWโ€™s commitment to preserving Indiaโ€™s artistic legacy.

โ€œThrough this partnership, we are proud to support Assam in creating a museum that celebrates shared heritage and fosters global cultural engagement,โ€ she said.

The museum will include advanced climate-control systems and high-end security features to ensure the safe preservation of rare artefacts.

Once completed, it is expected to become a landmark institution for cultural tourism and a bridge connecting Assamโ€™s spiritual heritage with the world.
