Imphal: Security forces in Manipur conducted a series of coordinated operations across multiple districts over the past 24 hours, arresting six people and seizing substantial quantities of suspected narcotics. The operations, involving state police, central forces and an anti-drug organisation, targeted alleged insurgent activities, extortion networks and drug trafficking operations.
In Imphal West, a joint team of the Thoubal District Police Commando (CDO-Thoubal), Imphal West Commando (CDO-Imphal West) and 46 Assam Rifles arrested an alleged active cadre of the banned Kangleipak Yaol Kanba Lup (KYKL).
The accused was identified as 21-year-old Chongtham Chetan Singh, alias Pari, son of Ch. Bobo Singh. He was apprehended from his residence at Sagoltongba Mayai Leikai under Patsoi Police Station.
According to officials, Singh was allegedly involved in extortion activities in the area.
Meanwhile, security forces conducted separate anti-narcotics operations in different districts, resulting in the recovery of suspected brown sugar and heroin.
In Churachandpur, district police arrested 35-year-old Manglo Ngailianching, alias Matei, daughter of Khamsuanmang. She was intercepted at Thingkangphai village. Police recovered 10 soap cases containing around 112 grams of suspected brown sugar from her possession.
In another major operation at Keikol, a joint team of the Imphal East District Police Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF), CRPF and Youth Against Drugs and Alcohol Manipur (YADAM) raided a suspected drug-related location.
The operation resulted in the arrest of three people – Robin Thapa, 23, of Kangpokpi; Sarju Chetry, 33, of Karbi Anglong, Assam; and Padam Rai, 38, of Imphal East.
The team seized approximately 1.020 kg of suspected brown sugar, along with a Honda Activa scooter and three mobile phones allegedly used in the drug trade.
Separately, personnel from Lilong Police Station intercepted an alleged drug transaction and arrested two brothers, Md. Imtiyaz Khan, 22, and Md. Akbar, 36, sons of the late Md. Maneruddin.
The two, residents of Lilong Uku Lilong Keirak Mamang, were allegedly found carrying around 24 grams of suspected heroin powder.
Cases have been registered in connection with the arrests and seizures, including under provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Further investigation is underway to establish the source of the seized substances and identify other individuals allegedly linked to the drug networks.
