Assam Governor Prof Jagdish Mukhi appealed to all residents of the State to whole heartedly support and adhere to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call for voluntary observance of a self-imposed Janata Curfew by all residents on Sunday in view of COVID-19 outbreak.
The Governor also urged upon all to stay at home from 7 am to 9 pm and lend their efforts to save the country from the scourge of novel coronavirus outbreak by containment, control and roll back of the spread of this pandemic.
Prof Mukhi said the global outbreak of COVID- 19, a novel strain of virus has had a cascading effect on the humanity.

Even nations with advanced health science are on their toes trying to study the nature of the virus and come out with an antidote, but have so far not been successful in developing any vaccine.
In this challenging scenario, the scientific fraternity all over the world has suggested that ‘social distancing’ and ‘avoidance of any kind of social gathering’ is the best and most effective means to keep the virus infection at bay.
The Governor, therefore, said, “In consonance with the request of the Prime Minister, we should stay at our home and follow social distancing”.
He, however, observed that “the third phase of the virus outbreak can be prevented or atleast delayed only if we strictly follow the advisory given by the Health and Family Welfare Department”.
The Governor also said that outbreak of novel Corona virus is a global problem and hence large scale mass awareness is the only viable option for building a well concerted deterrent against the virus.
The Governor further maintained that with no cure or vaccine being available, social distancing would be the best way to break the chain of infection.
‘Resolve’ and ‘Restrain’ as advocated by the Prime Minister will be the key to fight the virus, he said.
We should resolve to fight the pandemic, following scientific practices of self health and hygiene and restrain oneself from social gathering and instead follow social distancing.
Referring to Prime Minister’s call to pay respect and appreciate the work of those dedicated personnel involved in healthcare, sanitation and all other essential services including all government servants, the Governor said, “We should all acknowledge their selfless service by expressing our appreciation through clapping and cheering on Sunday at 5 pm at whatever place that we may stay”.
The Governor also requested the people at large to additionally take to traditional medicines and foods such as tulsi, giloi, ginger, lemon and turmeric that may be helpful in strengthening the immune system, which is key to an effective fight against the virus.
Prof Mukhi also asked all the concerned officials of Government of Assam, the various central agencies serving in Assam and all volunteers and workers of social, religious and political organizations to put their men and materials on duty to encourage the people around to adopt adequate precautions.
He further stated that everyone should work in unison to tackle the situation.
“With adequate precautions, safety measures and personal hygiene, we can overcome the challenge posed by COVID- 19,” the Governor claimed.
In view of the above challenge, the Governor has also advised the Government of Assam to have a relook into the conduct of elections to Bodoland Territorial Council in the near future.
