A 40-year-old COVID-19 positive man in Assam died due to head injuries that he sustained while trying to flee from a quarantine centre.
The deceased had recently returned from Odisha and he was quarantined in a school near his native village in Bongaigaon district.
Bongaigaon Deputy Commissioner (DC) Lakshmi Priya informed that the deceased and another person tested positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.
“An ambulance was sent to the quarantine centre to transfer both the patients to a hospital,” the DC said.
“However, when the ambulance reached the centre, he tried to climb a wall and escape the quarantine centre,” the DC added.
“Unfortunately he slipped and sustained severe head injuries, leading to his demise,” she further said.
The DC informed that the man died on Thursday in the medical college hospital in neighbouring Barpeta district.
He was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU).
The DC further said that his death won’t be counted as a COVID-19 fatality as he didn’t die to the symptoms related to the outbreak, despite testing positive for COVID-19.
