Four months after the inauguration of Bogibeel Bridge by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the place is littered by plastic bottles and plastic packets.
Bogibeel Bridge has become a tourist destination after it’s inauguration on December 25 last year by Prime Minister Modi. Visitors from different areas come to see the longest rail cum road bridge of India and dump plastic bottles and plastic packets on the bridge.
“The visitors dump plastic bottles and chips packets on the bridge. They should know the basic civic sense but it is seen that people are not aware of the civic sense. We are very much hurt when we see plastic bottles and chips packets littered around Bogibeel Bridge. Lots of sentiments are attached with the Bogibeel Bridge because it is the lifeline for the people of north and south bank,” Ranjit Baruah, a resident of Dibrugarh said.
After the inauguration of Bogibeel Bridge, the rush of tourist has increased and often tourists are seen taking selfies on the Bogibeel Bridge.
Bogibeel Bridge is the fifth bridge over the Brahmaputra, linking Dhemaji and Dibrugarh district of Upper Assam.
“I’ve seen that children come with chips packet with their parents to see the bridge after that they throw the packets on the bridge. The parents don’t say anything to them. The parents should teach them not to throw chips packets and plastic bottles on the bridge but most of the times they didn’t say anything,” Nobinita Sharma a school teacher said.
“Due to lack of awareness, people are throwing plastic bottles on the bridge but this should be stopped. The district administration should take necessary action against such people. Bogibeel Bridge is a national project and our sentiment is attached with the bridge. Our main concern is to keep the bridge clean,” said Lankeswar Deori, a resident of Dibrugarh.
Recently, some organisations took a cleanliness drive at Bogibeel Bridge and collected many plastic bottles. A Dibrugarh based entrepreneur took out the cleanliness drive. He was seen cleaning the paan stains and picking up the trashes which were dumped on the bridge.
Dr Sashikanta Saikia, principal of DHSK College and Assam brand ambassador of Swacch Bharat Mission said, “The visitors should keep the bridge clean because Bogibeel is a national asset and it is our duty to keep the bridge clean from plastic bottles. If we see plastic bottles littering on the bridge then we should pick up the bottles and dumped it into dustbins. I appeal everybody to keep the Bogibeel Bridge clean.”
