Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly passed a resolution, on Monday, May 25, supporting one-third reservation for women in Parliament and state legislatures after the delimitation process is completed.
Women and Child Welfare Minister Ajanta Neog placed the proposal during the third day of the first session of the newly formed Assembly, where it received unanimous approval from members.
The resolution underscores a commitment to reserving one-third of seats in Parliament and state legislatures for women, a move intended to dismantle structural barriers and foster more inclusive political representation in the region.
While speaking in the House, Neog said women are widely respected in society, but greater political and social support is still required to improve their representation in decision-making roles.
She added that women’s political participation remains low worldwide, including in India, due to several social and educational barriers.
Referring to the women’s reservation law brought by the central government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the minister said it would help expand women’s role in politics.
Neog urged all legislators to support the resolution unanimously and pointed out that several NDA-ruled states had already taken similar steps.
She also noted that Assam has recently elected its fifth woman MLA, calling it a positive sign for women’s representation in public life.
