Imphal: The Kuki Inpi Jiri, Tamenglong and Noney (JTN) has announced a 24-hour economic blockade in protest against the killing of a Kuki woman and the injuries sustained by her husband and six-year-old son in an attack at Tollen village in Manipur’s Tamenglong district on Sunday.
In a statement, the organisation condemned the attack and alleged that suspected Naga militants opened fire at the family’s home at around 4 am.
The organisation identified the deceased as Lhingjangai Singsit, wife of Seineh Singsit. It said Seineh, a farmer, sustained serious bullet injuries, while their six-year-old son was also wounded. Their other two sons escaped unharmed, according to the statement.
The allegations regarding the involvement of Naga militants could not be independently verified.
Kuki Inpi JTN said the attack occurred only a few hundred metres from where security forces were deployed in the area and sought clarification over how the incident took place despite the presence of security personnel.
The organisation has demanded immediate action to bring those responsible to justice and called for the case to be transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for investigation.
It has also sought permanent deployment of adequate security personnel at Tollen village to protect civilians.
The organisation said it would not accept the mortal remains of Lhingjangai Singsit for her funeral until justice was delivered.
Kuki Inpi JTN has given the government 24 hours to initiate what it described as concrete action on its demands.
As part of the protest, it announced a 24-hour economic blockade with immediate effect and warned that an indefinite total shutdown would follow if the government failed to act within the stipulated period.
The organisation said the protest was aimed at seeking justice for the deceased woman and accountability over the attack.
