Guwahati: The proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill introduced in the Assam Assembly on Monday triggered sharp political reactions, with the opposition Congress questioning both the need for the legislation and the manner in which it was brought before the House.

The Congress alleged that the move was part of the BJPโ€™s political agenda and criticised the government for introducing the bill without consulting political parties in the state.

โ€œWe already asked why it is needed. The parties of Assam should have been consulted, which was not done. UCC is a political agenda of the BJP. How will it benefit the Assamese public?โ€ Assam Pradesh Congress Committee Working President Jakir Hussain Sikdar told ANI.

The party also said the contents and implications of the proposed legislation would have to be examined before any conclusion could be drawn on its merits or necessity.

Meanwhile, the BJP expressed confidence that the bill would be passed during the ongoing Assembly session and implemented in the state thereafter.

โ€œIt has been introduced, and it should be passed in this session itself. After this, it will be implemented in the state,โ€ BJP MLA Biswajit Daimary told ANI.
