Guwahati: Over 50 people fell ill in Assam’s Kaliabor after reportedly consuming fruits that had been served as prasad during a Shani Puja.
The annual ceremony was held on Saturday night at Haribhanga in Ambagan, Kaliabor. As part of the puja arrangements, fruits were prepared for the ceremony and subsequently given to devotees as prasad.
Soon after eating the offerings, several villagers reportedly developed symptoms such as fever, vomiting and dysentery.
By Sunday, more than 50 affected people had been admitted to the Kaliabor Sub-Divisional Civil Hospital in Jakhalabandha.
They are currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
The reason for the illness remains undetermined, with food poisoning being considered a possibility.
