People in large numbers including members of Asom Satra Mahasabha on Monday staged a ‘spiritual’ protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA at Chabua in Dibrugarh district of Assam.

The protesters with Gayan Bayan staged protest against the citizenship act in a traditional way.

The total footfall was estimated to be around 10,000 and six Xatradhikars of six Satras of Assam participated in the protest.

Chabua is the birthplace of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

The protest was organised by All Assam Muttock Yuba Chatra Sanmilan (AAMYCS).

“CAA is a threat to Assam’s indigenous identity and it is a ploy to divide the people. If CAA is implemented then Assamese people will become a minority in their own land,” said a protester.

AAMYCS president David Chetia said, “Today we have staged a spiritual protest against CAA. Everybody is dissatisfied with the BJP government for supporting CAA.”

“We strongly oppose CAA as it is against the spirit of the Assam Accord,” Chetia added.
