The National Highway 52 at Kakopathar in Upper Assam’s Tinsukia district became like Kashmir for two hours as the area along with various other parts of the district lashed by hailstorms in the afternoon on Sunday.

According to information, hailstorms continued to hit areas like Kakopathar, Dirak, Penegree, Bordumsa, Margherita, Tinsukia town since afternoon till evening.

Many parts of the National Highway 37 and National Highway 52 in Tinsukia district were whitewashed due to massive hailstorms.

According to information, due to the hailstones which covered many parts of the National Highways in the district, vehicular traffic was off the roads for around two hours.

On the other hand, the first shower accompanied by hailstones in the Assamese month of ‘Phagun’ (February-March) damaged the crops in Tinsukia district.

The normal life in the district was affected due to the hailstorms which came all of a sudden.

According to media reports, moving to East and Northeast India, the cyclonic circulation lies over Central Assam and adjoining Meghalaya.

Due to this system, light to moderate rains will affect some places over the northeastern states, except West Assam.

As per weather forecast, winds will blow at 50 km per hour and it will affect areas in Tinsukia, Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts besides thundershowers are likely to hit from half an hour to three hours till late night.
