Sensation prevails in the Pengeri area under the Tinsukia district of upper Assam after recovery of a huge cache of arms and ammunition on Saturday.
According to information, several magazines along with live ammunition were recovered at Ritu Pathar of Tarani village under the Pengeri police station in Tinsukia district.
On the basis of secret information, a team of Margherita Sub-divisional police launched a search operation and was able to recover the magazines and ammunition from the possession of one individual identified as Sarakanta Moran.
Police suspect that the recovered firearms and ammunition might belong to the anti-talk faction of the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I).
According to sources, police continue to interrogate Sarakanta Moran for gathering more information regarding the firearms and ammunition. which are foreign-made.
The recovery of a huge cache of magazines and ammunition belonging to a suspected militant organisation just a few weeks ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2019 has created massive sensation in the entire area.
It has been learnt that the police and Army have intensified security in the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border areas in Tinsukia district in the last few days.
It has been suspected that after being failed to transport the magazines and the ammunition amidst tight security cover, some militants might have left the same in the field.
On the other hand, according to security agencies, following Myanmar Army crackdown on militant camps belonging to insurgent groups of the northeastern region in Myanmar, several militant groups have made attempts to enter Indian soil.
