15 dead, over 60 injured as Kanchanjungha Express collides with freight train

Guwahati: The tragic accident involving the Kanchanjungha Express and a Goods train has resulted in the death of at least 15 people and more than 60 are injured, according to reports.

The accident happened at 9.30 am when the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjungha Express had just left the New Jalpaiguri station.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the Centre has increased the ex-gratia compensation for those who have been killed to Rs 10 lakh.

Vaishnaw took to X and wrote, “Enhanced ex-gratia compensation will be provided to the victims; Rs 10 Lakh in case of death, Rs 2.5 Lakh towards grievous and Rs 50,000 for minor injuries.”

According to reports, the passenger express was hit from behind by a Goods train and the impact was such that two bogies derailed.

One of the bogies that derailed was the General compartment which is generally filled more than capacity.

The other bogie was a freight carriage.

“Rescue operation completed. The driver (Loco pilot) who disregarded the signal has died & also the guard of Kanchenjunga Express has lost his life. Help desks established at all railway stations along the Agartala- Sealdah route,” said Jaya Varma Sinha Chairman & CEO Railway Board.

It is learnt that among the deceased three persons are Railway employees.
