The Kel and Panyor rivers were on Saturday cleaned of several quintals of trash and garbage by over 1,000 volunteers
Both the rivers flow through the heart of Yazali town in Lower Subansiri district.
Notably, locals from all walks of life participated in the river cleaning drive launched by Golden Jubilee Yazali Nyokum Yullo Celebration Committee, in collaboration with the Swachh Arunachal Mission (SAM).
The noble initiative to clean the rivers was taken prior to the festival celebration.
Braving the chilly wintery morning, the volunteers jumped into the rivers and cleaned up tons of trash and garbage that had accumulated over the years.
Volunteers of Yazali Nyokum Yullo also launched a cleaning drive at the market place, office premises and educational institutions.
Local residents from adjoining villages participated in the drive supervised by a team from Swachh Bharat Mission in Itanagar.
Talking to media on the side-lines of the programme, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Yazali, JT Obi called upon the people to keep their surroundings clean and such drives should be maintained at regular basis.
The Golden Jubilee Yazali Nyokum Yullo Celebration Committee, in collaboration with the Swachh Arunachal Mission, is also creating awareness among the villagers about the importance of cleanliness.
Notably, the committee has already banned the use of plastic and other non-biodegradable substances to make the festival eco-friendly in the true sense of the term.
