One hundred meritorious girl students, who are studying in engineering colleges and polytechnics of Assam, received special merit scholarships, provided by the State Government during a programme in Guwahati on Thursday.
The special scholarships were presented to the meritorious girl students studying in engineering colleges and polytechnics under the Directorate of Higher (Technical) Education, Government of Assam, during a award giving ceremony organised at Srimanta Sankardeva International Auditorium situated at Kalaskhetra in Guwahati on Thursday.

The scholarships were presented to the girl students by Assam Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya and Minister of State for Education, Labour & Employment and Tea Tribes Welfare, Pallab Lochan Das.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who was supposed to be present at the programme, could not attend the programme due to his other engagements.

Informing about the programme by uploading some images of the same, Assam Education Minister Bhattacharya stated in Assamese language on his Twitter handle that “I believe our this initiative taken by our Government will immensely help the girl students and it will also help them financially to some extent. This initiative has been able to properly reflect one of the objectives of our Government – ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ (translated).”
He also congratulated all the meritorious girl students who were able to receive scholarships at Thursday’s programme and wished them a bright future.
Jhimlee Dutta, daughter of Jagannath Dutta of Purba Fanai at Dullabehera also received the Special Merit Scholarship from Assam Government. She is currently pursuing her studies at the Assam Engineering College (AEC) in Jalukbari in Guwahati.
Out of the 100 meritorious girl students, Jhimlee Dutta was one of the 28 students of Assam Engineering College who received the merit scholarships from Assam Education Minister Bhattacharya on Thursday.
In order to encourage girl students of Assam towards technical education, the Assam Government has started this scholarship scheme.
Jhimlee Dutta’s father is an ex-Army man and her mother is a housewife.
The parents of Jhimlee Dutta have expressed their happiness at their daughter receiving the scholarship.
They wished that such encouragement would go a long way in helping the meritorious students of the State.
Jhimlee’s parents also thanked the Assam Government for the scheme.
It is worth mentioning that this is for the first time that girl students studying in technical institutions have been awarded by the Assam Government to attract and motivate girl students for pursuing higher studies in the technical fields.
