Imphal: Security forces in Manipur carried out a series of operations across Imphal East, Imphal West and Bishnupur districts, arresting three individuals allegedly involved in drug smuggling, militant activities and extortion, and recovering suspected narcotics and a vehicle.
According to Manipur Police reports on Thursday, the arrests and seizure took place over the past three days.
Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team of central and state security personnel, along with Imphal East commandos, intercepted a suspected narcotics smuggling operation.
The arrested individual was identified as Md. Eliyas Khan, 28, a resident of Hatta Central Masjid Road in Imphal East.
During a search, security personnel recovered 10 soap cases containing approximately 130 grams of suspected Heroin No. 4. Investigators said the contraband was allegedly being transported to Kohima in Nagaland.
In a separate operation, the commando unit of Imphal West district (CDO-IW) arrested a suspected member of a proscribed militant outfit in the Keishampat Leimajam Leikai area under the jurisdiction of Imphal Police Station.
The arrested person was identified as Khwairakpam Malemchaoba Meitei, 29, alias Meitei, son of Kh. Nabakumar Meitei. Police said he is an active member of the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party-People’s War Group (KCP-PWG) and is originally from Thanga Oinam Leikai in Bishnupur district.
In another operation targeting extortion activities, security forces arrested an alleged active cadre of a banned armed group at Nambol Chingmang Crossing under Nambol Police Station in Bishnupur district.
Police identified the arrested person as Salam Tomba Singh, 22, who also uses the aliases Itomba, Tondonba and Atomba. He is a resident of Khabam Bamdiar Mayai Leikai in Bishnupur district and is allegedly associated with the proscribed United National Liberation Front-Koirang (UNLF-K).
A red Honda Activa bearing registration number MN01AB 8812 was also recovered from his possession. Police said the vehicle was allegedly used during extortion activities.
Legal proceedings have been initiated against all three arrested persons, while further investigations are underway.
