Guwahati: Conservationists and residents have raised alarm after repeated road accidents led to the deaths of endangered Golden Langurs along the Bismuri-Saralpara stretch inside Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park in Kokrajhar and Chirang, where ongoing road widening by the PWD is believed to be disrupting canopy movement routes.

Local groups say at least two langurs have been killed in the past month, as the removal of roadside trees has forced the arboreal primates to descend to the ground more often, increasing their exposure to traffic.

Environmental concerns have intensified with calls for urgent mitigation steps such as canopy bridges, rope crossings, stricter speed controls, rumble strips and improved warning signage to reduce wildlife mortality in the protected zone.

Stakeholders have also urged closer coordination between forest authorities, park management and the Public Works Department to balance infrastructure expansion with biodiversity protection, warning that higher traffic flow could worsen future risks for the species.
