Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi expressed concern over the escalating tension along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border, saying the situation had become more tense instead of easing two days after the latest incident.
“Even after two days, instead of the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border dispute subsiding, the situation has become more tense, which is a matter of concern for both states,” Gogoi stated in a social media post on Thursday.
Tension along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border intensified on Thursday following fresh stone-pelting near Likabali, while an economic blockade in several border areas kept the situation volatile.
Gogoi called on the administrations of the two BJP-ruled states to work together and find a permanent solution to the long-standing boundary dispute through a constitutional and legal mechanism.
His remarks came as tensions continued along the inter-state boundary amid protests and disruptions to movement.
“In this situation, it has become extremely necessary for the administrations of both BJP-ruled states to work together and adopt a constitutional and legal mechanism to find a permanent solution to the boundary problem between the two states,” Gogoi stated.
The latest tension was reported near Likabali on Thursday following incidents of stone-pelting along the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary. The situation has remained unsettled since Monday, when alleged firing in the Mingmang-Bodoti area left 11 villagers from Assam injured.
The firing reportedly followed a dispute over land claimed by Assam and allegations that people from Arunachal Pradesh had occupied the disputed area.
The incident has since triggered strong reactions in Assam, with several organisations imposing an economic blockade in border areas from Wednesday.
Gogoi also urged both administrations to take adequate measures to ensure that civilians are not subjected to harassment amid the escalating situation.
“In this tense situation, I appeal to the administrations of both states to take appropriate measures so that ordinary citizens of both states do not have to face harassment,” he said.
All 11 villagers injured in Monday’s firing are currently undergoing treatment at Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH) in Dibrugarh.
