Imphal: The Mao Students’ Union (MSU) expressed gratitude to Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and the state Cabinet for approving a new government medical college in Senapati, calling the 100-seat MBBS project a historic milestone that will transform healthcare and education in the region.
The Manipur State Cabinet, which met at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat in Mantripukhri on August 11, 2026, granted in-principle approval for the establishment of a new government medical college in Senapati district.
The project will have an annual intake capacity of 100 MBBS students. To meet regulatory clinical and infrastructure standards, the existing Senapati District Hospital will undergo comprehensive upgrades.
The Mao Students’ Union (MSU) released a statement expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and the state Council of Ministers. The union praised the leadership for clearing a project that fulfils a long-standing public aspiration.
The MSU said the project addresses a critical developmental gap in the hill region and urged the authorities to fast-track its implementation so that local communities can benefit from improved medical and educational facilities.
The MSU added that the medical college is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery in the district, create new opportunities for medical education for local students and contribute to the district’s overall growth and development.
Senapati district, located near the Nagaland border, is predominantly inhabited by major Naga communities, including the Mao, Poumai, Maram and Thangal tribes, along with other groups such as the Zemei and smaller communities.
