Guwahati: Amid widespread speculation on social media regarding the alleged sale of The Assam Tribune, an English daily published from Guwahati, to industrialist Gautam Adani, the newspaper group has strongly denied the claims, calling them โ€œbaseless and defamatoryโ€.

In a strongly worded statement issued on social media, the management of The Assam Tribune said the rumours originated from an โ€œunverified Facebook postโ€ uploaded on May 24 by one Gyanen Chakraborty, which allegedly claimed that the newspaper had been sold to Adani for Rs 420 crore.

The publication expressed concern over how the unverified claim was rapidly amplified by โ€œprominent personalities and even media outletsโ€ without any official confirmation or fact-checking.

โ€œNo official confirmation. No credible source. No due diligence. Just pure confidence and a share button,โ€ the statement said, criticising what it described as irresponsible journalism and social media speculation.

The newspaper also highlighted its 88-year legacy, stating that generations of the Baruah family, from founder Radha Govinda Baruah onwards, had worked tirelessly to uphold the institutionโ€™s credibility and public trust.

โ€œFor nearly nine decades, The Assam Tribune has remained committed to preserving the trust of its readers, and it will continue to do so in the years ahead,โ€ the statement added.

The management further warned that strict legal action would be initiated against individuals or organisations involved in โ€œcreating, spreading, or amplifying such baseless and defamatory allegations.โ€

The statement drew widespread support on X, with several users expressing relief and solidarity with the publication.

One user wrote, โ€œThank you. @assamtribuneoff is the last trusted media house in the region. Highest respect and regards to The Assam Tribune family.โ€

Another user commented, โ€œEverybody in Assam wanted the news to be false. What a relief that you have confirmed it to be false!!!โ€

A third user posted, โ€œThanks for the clarification. Let us stand by Assamโ€™s pillar of ethical journalism, faith and pride.โ€

Another user wrote, โ€œAssam Tribune is the trusted and prominent English daily in our state since inception.โ€

Known as one of the most trusted and credible news brands in Assam, The Assam Tribune has long enjoyed a strong readership base across the Northeast.
