Guwahati: The Gauhati High Court is scheduled to take up the bail petition of Shyamkanu Mahanta on May 25 in connection with the widely followed case relating to the death of Zubeen Garg. The hearing, now entering its third stage, is expected to be crucial in shaping the immediate legal position of the accused.

The proceedings have drawn significant public and media attention across Assam in recent weeks, with both sides advancing detailed submissions before the court. Earlier hearings in the matter were held on May 15 and May 22 before Justice Mitali Thakuria.

During the previous hearing, senior advocate Pran Bora, appearing on behalf of Mahanta, submitted additional documents and presented detailed arguments in support of the bail plea. The defence maintained before the court that the death of Zubeen Garg was purely accidental and did not involve any intentional wrongdoing.

Mahantaโ€™s legal team argued that criminal liability could not be attributed to him in the matter. Referring to statements recorded by the Special Investigation Team (SIT), the defence claimed that several testimonies reinforced Mahantaโ€™s assertion of innocence. The counsel also cited past judicial rulings in comparable cases while pressing for bail.

During Mondayโ€™s proceedings, the prosecution is expected to place its arguments before the court and oppose the bail petition. Advocate General Devajit Lon Saikia is likely to appear alongside the stateโ€™s legal representatives, reflecting the importance the government has attached to the case.

As both parties prepare to conclude their submissions, the matter continues to draw widespread attention across Assam. The courtโ€™s decision on the bail application is expected to significantly influence the direction of the high-profile case.
