Imphal: The Manipur governmentโs plan to resettle internally displaced persons by March 31, 2026, faced a setback after an official team was attacked while conducting an assessment in the inter district area of Imphal West and Kangpokpi.
According to officials, the incident occurred at Kanto Premnagar under Sekmai police station when a government team visited the area to assess houses damaged during earlier violence. A staff member of the Sub Deputy Collector office, Sekmai, and one internally displaced person sustained injuries during the incident.
The assessment team, led by the Sub Deputy Collector, Sekmai, along with security personnel from the Leimakhong military garrison, had visited Keingam Chingmang hills and Kanto Premnagar as part of the governmentโs resettlement process.
Reports stated that around 20 individuals from a nearby area objected to the assessment and threatened the team while photographs were being taken of damaged residential structures at Kanto Premnagar. The structures belonged to residents displaced during the period of unrest.
The security team included police personnel led by the Sub Divisional Police Officer, Lamphel, the Officer in Charge of Sekmai police station, and troops stationed at the Leimakhong military garrison. Following the confrontation, the officials and security personnel left the area. An internally displaced person who was part of the team said that security personnel advised them to move away from the site.
The visit was part of the state governmentโs broader resettlement initiative announced by the Manipur Chief Secretary on January 29, 2026. The government aims to resettle 10,000 displaced families, comprising more than 40,000 individuals, by March 31, 2026. Officials stated that around 16,500 displaced persons have been resettled so far.
