Imphal: BJP central leaders have invited all MLAs representing the BJP, NPP, and NPF from Manipur to New Delhi for a crucial meeting on February 2, 2026, reportedly to discuss the reinstallation of a popular government in the state.
Reports on Sunday stated that the invitations were sent through Manipur Pradesh BJP President A. Sarda Devi as well as directly to the MLAs, instructing all BJP and allied legislators (NPP and NPF) to assemble in New Delhi on February 2.
This political development comes against the backdrop of the Manipur Legislative Assembly being placed under suspended animation.
The state was brought under Presidentโs Rule on February 13, 2025, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh on February 9, 2025.
Presidentโs Rule, initially imposed for six months, was later extended for another six months from August 13, 2025.
With Presidentโs Rule set to complete one full year on February 12, 2026, speculation is rife regarding the formation of a new popular government in Manipur in the coming week.
At the time Presidentโs Rule was imposed under Article 356 of the Constitution of India, the party positions in the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly were: BJP (37), NPP (6), NPF (5), INC (5), KPA (2), JD(U) (1), and Independents (3), with one seat vacant.
Since the state remains under Presidentโs Rule, and as per the Constitution of India, the Manipur Budget for 2026โ27 may be tabled in the Lok Sabha on March 10, 2026, and in the Rajya Sabha on March 12, 2026, if no popular government is installed by then.
Separate bulletins issued by Parliament indicate that there may be a general discussion on the Manipur Budget for 2026โ27, along with discussion and voting on Demands for Grants for 2026โ27 on March 10 in the Lok Sabha and March 12 in the Rajya Sabha, should the State Assembly remain under suspended animation or be dissolved by that time.
