Guwahati: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) and other Left parties staged a protest at Volvo Point in Ulubari, Guwahati, on Wednesday, demanding enhanced compensation for flood victims of Upper Assam and immediate financial assistance for affected families.
The protesters sought Rs 25 lakh compensation for the families of people who died in the floods, along with immediate financial assistance for families who suffered losses to their homes, property and livelihoods.
The Left parties also demanded that Assamโs recurring flood problem be declared a national issue, citing its impact on lives, property and livelihoods across the state.
The protesters raised a separate political demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The demonstration later turned into a confrontation between protesters and police, with several protesters detained as the situation intensified. Visuals from the site showed police personnel attempting to control the protesters amid a scuffle between the two sides.
The detained protesters were taken from the Ulubari site to the dharna venue at Chachal, where they were expected to continue their demonstration and press for their demands.
