Agartala: Authorities have detained ten people following communal clashes in Saidarpar, Kumarghat sub-division of Tripura’s Unakoti district, which erupted over disputes regarding voluntary contributions for a local temple.
The clashes occurred on Saturday (January 10, 2026) in Saidarpar over the collection of temple โchandaโ (subscription), officials said.
According to Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai, the situation has remained calm since the incident, with paramilitary personnel actively patrolling the area.
He added that restrictions under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita are still in place and internet connectivity remains suspended. Officials will review conditions before considering any relaxation of the measures.
The unrest left four police officers and six residents injured.
Congress legislator Birajit Sinha said he was barred from entering the area to meet affected villagers. โWe planned to visit those impacted, but police denied access, citing security concerns,โ he said, expressing his objection.
Opposition leader Jitendra Chaudhury criticised the state government, claiming it failed to safeguard minority communities.
He also noted that the chief minister was reportedly attending a roadshow in Kanchanpur, North Tripura, while the violence occurred and had not publicly condemned the incident.
Tripura BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee condemned the clashes and commended the police for taking prompt action against those responsible for the unrest.
