The Udalguri District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Das has imposed Section 144 CrPC in the entire district with immediate effect from Sunday.

Section 144 prohibits an assembly of more than four people in public place, carrying and display of firearms or
lethal weapons, wall writing or affixing of posters, pillion riding in motorbikes and use of loudspeakers.

In a bid to maintain normalcy, peace and tranquility in purview of the complete draft publication of NRC and forthcoming 72nd Independence day celebration, this order intends to thwart the nefarious attempts of rumour mongers and restrict the movement of insurgents along the Indo-Bhutan and Assam-Arunachal border.

However, judicial officers, executive magistrates, police personnel, army and paramilitary forces, medical
officers and any person to whom permission is accorded from the Udalguri District administration are exempted from the purview of this order.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC are usually imposed when there is an apprehension of a law and order situation.
