The exhibition was aimed at spreading awareness among the children about the defence forces

Guwahati: The Indian Army on Saturday showcased its sophisticated weapons and equipment to the students of Moirang in Bishnupur district of Manipur.

The exhibition, organised as a commemorative event of the 78th Infantry Day, witnessed the participation of an overwhelming 1,200 students and 75 teachers from different schools of Moirang town and its adjoining areas, Kohima-based Defence Pro Lt Col Amit Shukla said.

Sophisticated in-service weapons and equipment used by the Indian Army were showcased during the day-long event, he added.

The exhibition was aimed at spreading awareness among the children about the defence forces, he said.

Infantry Day is an annual event observed by the Indian Army to commemorate a significant day in India’s military history, he added.

The infantry units of Indian Army were airlifted to Srinagar on October 27, 1947 to defend Jammu and Kashmir against an invasion by tribal militias and the Pakistan Army, he said.

Lt Col Shukla said this was the first military operation conducted by independent India which marked the beginning of the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948.

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1947-1948 – also known as the first Kashmir war – was fought between India and Pakistan over the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir from 1947 to 1948.

It was the first of the four Indo-Pakistani wars between the two newly independent nations.

Pakistan precipitated the war a few weeks after its independence by launching tribal militias from Waziristan in an effort to capture Kashmir and to preempt the possibility of its ruler joining India.
